Abstract

Key Words : Speaking Skill, Word Chain Game English is one of the important subject, which is learned and taught in Indonesian schools from Elementary School until Universities. In preliminary study, speaking skill of the second grade of MTs. Annuriyyah Kaliwining needs improvement. Based on teacher experience and the results of preliminary study, it revealed that the students were difficult on how to express their ideas in English verbally. The objective of this research is to find out the implementation of word chain game to improve the students’ speaking achievement and to find out the students’ participation in the class of speaking by implementing word chain game. The research design was Classroom Action Research (CAR) of Kemmis and Taggard (2014). The procedures of the research consists of four main stages: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The cycle of this study consists of one cycle. It consists of 4 meetings. In planning, the researcher and collaborator prepare lesson plan based on the observation in the preliminary study. In implementation the researcher as a practitioner carries out the lesson plan in the class. Then, observing is the process of recording and gathering data about aspects or event that was happening in teaching and learning process during the implementation the action. The last is reflecting, the researcher analyze the data and compared the criteria of success and the data or evidence exists. The criteria of individual success is equal to or higher than 70. While the criteria of classical success is achieved when 60% of the students got the good criteria. The subjects of this research were 25 students of class VIII B of MTs. Annuriyyah. There was significant improvement of the students test result. On preliminary study there were 20 (5 of students) who passed the test. However, in cycle 1 there were 76% (19 students) who passed the test. It means that the implementation of the word chain game could improve the students’ speaking skill. Based on the result of students participation in the classroom, the researcher got positive responses and the percentage of students who a responses about Word Chain Game was 57%. Students were very interested with this technique and they had fun when playing this game Based on the result, it can be concluded that the implementation of word chain game could improve the students’ speaking skill. It can be seen from the comparisons result between preliminary study and cycle 1, there was increasing on speaking skill. Generally, students are so attracted to this technique. The writer suggested that English teachers at Mts. Annuriyyah use word chain game as an alternative way in teaching vocabulary to improve their students’ speaking skill. It is also suggested for future researchers to conduct a similar study in other levels of the students to see whether it is applicable and effective for improving the students’ speaking skill.
