Abstract
This research is about the implementation of role play to improve the students’ speaking achievement. We know that, teaching speaking is the process of facilitating the students in learning to communicate with each other. In SMP Negeri 6 Jember, the observer found that many students were still not confident to speak up. They still lacked of vocabulary, felt afraid of making mistake, lacked of practice, and they could not speak well before doing preparation. From those reasons, the teacher should has a creativity like appropriate strategy to teach and make the students interested in speaking skill. In this research, the researcher used collaborative research with the english teacher and used role play as the strategy to teach speaking and resolve the problems above. Based on the background, the research question is: a) how can the role play improve the students’ speaking achievement at the 7th grade of SMP negeri 6 jember? b) what aspects of speaking improvement do the students get after the implementation of role play at the 7th grade of SMP Negeri 6 Jember?. The research objective is a) to explain that role play strategy can improve the students’ speaking achievement at the 7th grade of SMP Negeri 6 Jember, b) to know the aspects of speaking improvement after implementation role play at the 7th grade of SMP Negeri 6 Jember. This research is classroom action research. The participants of this research are the 7th grade of SMP Negeri 6 Jember in academic year 2019/2020. The researcher conducted this research in (VII B) class which consist of 32 students. This research was carried out in one cycle. In one cycle there were some steps namely planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The data of this research was completed by using speaking test, observation, interview and document review. After using role play strategy, the students’ speaking achievement has an improvement, such as the improvement in vocabulary, fluency and intonation. It was proved by the result of students’ score. The students’ average score after implementing role play was 70,3 and the percentage of students who achieved the minimum standart score (KKM 70) was 51.6%. This result could be said as successful result, because it was appropriate with the criteria of success in this research, that wasthe students reach the minimum score (70) are equal to or higher than 50%. Thus, it is concludedthat the role play strategy could improve the students’ speaking achievement. In this case, the researcher gave suggestion for future researcher to conduct better research on the other skills with other strategies in teaching and learning english especially in speaking skill. Beside, the researcher also gave suggestion for the teacher to give more attention in students’ interest by applying this strategy or other strategies that appropriate with the students’ need.
