Abstract

Vocabulary is very important to the comprehension of students in English. It is supported by a theory of Wilkins (1993) to suggest that without grammar it is very little can be conveyed, but without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed. We can still understand the language even if we know nothing about grammar. On the other hand, the language will tell us nothing if we know nothing about vocabulary. In the preliminary observation, the students of SMPN 1 Arjasa still lack of vocabulary. So that’s why the english teacher used english songs as the media in teaching vocabulary to the students. This research is important because what the english teacher do is potential to make teaching vocabulary is effective. This research develops three research questions: 1) How does the teacher plan the teaching vocabulary to the seventh grade students by using English songs at SMPN 1 Arjasa? 2) How does the teacher implement the teaching vocabulary to the seventh grade students by using English songs at SMPN 1 Arjasa? 3) How does the teacher evaluate his teaching vocabulary to the seventh grade students by using English songs at SMPN 1 Arjasa? This research aims 1) To describe the planning of teaching vocabulary to the seventh grade students by using English songs at SMPN 1 Arjasa. 2) To describe the implementation of teaching vocabulary to the seventh grade students by using English songs at SMPN 1 Arjasa. 3) To describe the evaluation of teaching vocabulary to the seventh grade students by using English songs at SMPN 1 Arjasa. This research employs a qualitative approach, by doing qualitative descriptive research. Determination of informants in this study is using purposive technique. The techniques used in collecting data in this research were: observation, interview and document review. This study used data analysis developed by Miles and Hiberman 2014 that is analysed data by three steps: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. In terms of checking the data validation, the researcher used a triangulation technique. This study found that in the planning stage the teacher make a good Lesson Plan based on syllabus of seventh grade students in the second semester in KTSP curriculum. The implementation of the steps in teaching vocabulary by using English songs is adapted from smahilah’s procedure of teaching English by using English song. The teacher used small sound, audio or video, song lyrics, laptop and LCD as the media. The technique that used by the teacher is Think-Pair-Share, another technique that the teacher used is audio visual. Based on the results of observation, the students were very active during the teaching and learning activities in the class. The evaluation used by teachers in SMPN 1 Arjasa in English learning activities is to use formative and summative evaluation. The teacher used formative evaluation when the learning process is finished by giving students a worksheet about the song. Then the score of students worksheet was improve step by step, meeting to the next meeting was always improve.
