Abstract

2023: Exploring Secondary School Student's Attitude towards Game Based
Vocabulary Learning: An Appraisal Analysis Framework Keywords: Game based vocabulary learning, Students judgment and student appreciation.

Vocabulary is one of the basic foreign language skills. In learning the basic of language, students must certainly accept the material well, interesting and fun if learning is packed with games. The game in this case is intended for
students to know and remember the vocabulary they learned either in the past or what they will learn. In a game there are a series of features that will motivate students to want, to know more about a material. Game mechanisms and activities that are enjoyed will be considered interesting by students, where later will generate great interest.

The formulation of research question of this study was “How is the student's attitude in game-based vocabulary learning analyzed from appraisal analysis framework? The research objective of this study was to examine the student's attitude in game-based vocabulary learning analyzed from appraisal analysis framework.

The researcher utilized a qualitative approach with a case study design in applying the Boggle game method as a media to learn vocabulary. Interview, observation, and document analysis is used in this study. The data selected in this
study are in the form of worksheet. This study also adds a little material that contains understanding and examples of vocabulary, both nouns, verbs, and adjectives. After analyzing the data, the researcher findings found three emerging themes: 1) Fun: learning vocabulary from picture media; 2) Students' ability to recognize vocabulary: students’ judgment; 3) Students’ appreciation of game based
vocabulary learning.

To conclude, game-based vocabulary learning will provide different situations, which is certainly interesting for students of their age. Boggle game is a media that helps students learn vocabulary in a fun way besides attitude.
Judgment, appreciation, students also play a role in the discussion of this research.
