Abstract
This research was based on the fact that many of the students of IAIN Jember did nikah siri (unregistered marriage). It made the researcher to focus on (1) finding out how the students practiced it and (2) the impacts of those practices, especially for the girls. This research applied Peter L Bergers’s Social Construction Theory. This research found that the informant's structure of consciousness was formed in three dialectic phases: externalization, objectification, and internalization processes. The practice of unregistered marriage by the students of IAIN Jember aimed to avoid committing sinful deeds while proposing and engaging. However, there were some different perspectives on the term of the unregistered marriage. Some of them understood it as merely an act to gain acknowledgment without involving any kind of activity allowed for the married couple. Meanwhile, the others understood it as an allowance to have sex with her couple. These practices had great impacts, especially for the women committed to them. It has limited their access for them to decide to practice this activity. It has confused them on their position and role relating to the existing different understanding and the problem of the children's legal rights resulting from the existing divorce.
