Abstract

Speaking English is a common issue for students learning a foreign language. The most common issues encountered during the speaking learning process include a lack of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. It makes the student unconfident in speaking English. Those problems can be handled by the teacher’s creativity by implementing additional media. The collaboration between teacher’s method in explaining the material and exploring the media can assist students understanding the material well. Picture prompt is the additional media which is used by the teacher in the class. It is the collaboration between pictures and prompts as a clue.
This research aimed to describe the implementation of picture prompt, and also the students’ responses toward applying picture prompts in speaking learning. The participants of this research were students of SMP Al-Furqan Jember consisting of one class, as the sample. The research questions were: 1) How does the teacher’s procedure to implement the picture prompt media in teaching speaking? 2) What are the students’ perceptions toward picture prompt media in teaching speaking? 3) What are the strengths and weaknesses of applying picture prompt media in teaching speaking?
This study applied with qualitative research method and case study as the reseach design. The subject of this research were the English teacher and 8F students’ of Al-Furqan Junior high school. The researcher used purposive sampling. Data collecting techniques used in this research were observation, interview, and document review. Source triangulation and triangulation technique used in this research for validated the data.
The results revealed that, 1) the teacher’s procedures to implement the picture prompt defided by two steps, In the first steps, the teacher explained the material. In the second steps, the teacher explored the picture prompt and given them some different pictures, after that the teacher asked them to make sentences.
2) Some students’ responses found during teaching and learning speaking by picture prompts are: Picture prompt can engage and reduce students’ boredom, Increase students’ development in understanding the material and speaking progress, and Picture prompt can reduce students doubted about their speaking performance. 3) The strengths to apply picture prompt were: picture prompt can support the students understand to the contexts well, Picture is an interesting media to apply in the class. Some materials need additional media to make the students understand well, as like grammar and text material. The weaknesses in applying the picture prompt were: Some students got trouble to described and analyzed the picture, some students confused with the instruction, therefore the teacher should give them explanation more, some of them also got difficulty on looked for and the use of appropriate vocabulary.
