Writing as a productive skill plays an essential role in promoting language acquisition as learners experiment with words, sentences, and large chunks of writing communicate effectively also to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary that they learn in the class. One of genres in writing at eleventh grade students is narative text. Narrative text is a text that tells a story that happened in the past event, which used the correlation between story as happened and tell a story based on structure time.
There were two research question in this reserach, those are: (1) How is the student’s ability in writing summarizing narrative text at eleventh grade of MA Wahid Hasyim Balung Jember?, and (2) What types of narrative text are represented in the students worksheet at eleventh grade of MA Wahid Hasyim Balung Jember?
The design of this research was qualitative. The subjects of this research were 26 students of 11 IPA 3. The data collection technique of this research was document analysis. To analyze the data, researcher used Donald Ary, Lucy Cheser Jacobs, Chris Sorensen, and Ashgar Razavieh theory. The data of this research was the student’s worksheet of writing summarizing of narrative text.
After analyzing the data, the researcher found some finding: (1) Student’s ability in writing from five aspect of writing in writing summarizing narrative text was good level classification. Vocabulary, they good enough in vocabularies, it means they had known well what are part of speech from the vocabularies. Grammar, some of them confused in using syntatic pattern of grammar and adjusting pronoun with the auxiliary verb. Mechanic, there were also many mistakes in mechanic aspect especially punctuation and capitalization. Content, they were able to compose summarizing of narrative text that relevant to the assigned topic. Organization of ideas, most of them composed summarizing of narrative text with complete organization of ideas that were tittle, orientation, complication, and resolution. This research found from 26 students, there were 3 students were belonging excelent level classification, 16 students were belonging good level classification, and 7 students were belonging adequate level classification.This research also found types of the narrative text were represented in the student’s worksheets. (2) There were two types of narrative text found in the student’s worksheets. Those were fairy tale under the tittle “Beauty and The Beast” and fable under the tittle “The Ant and The Grasshopper”. Based on the finding from 26 student’s worksheets, fairy tale was the most dominant types of narrative text represented in the student’s worksheets. It was represented from 15 students. Fable that represented from 11 students.
