Abstract

Reading is one of the important activities that is consistently carried out by students who are successful in each field of study. Reading is considered as one of the important skills that must be mastered in language learning, in addition there are still some problems faced by students to understand what they are reading. The problem comes from external and internal factors. One internal factor is personality. Personality is one of the factors that influence differences in the behavior and personality of students during their studies that can affect student reading achievement.
Based on the background above, this study is aims to find out whether or not there is significance correlation between the students’ personality types and reading achievement of the ninth grade students at SMP 1 Sukowono.
The design used in this research was quantitative research and the method used in this study was correlation method in which the variables correlated to each other. The research sample was 49 students of ninth grade SMPN 1 Sukowono that was taken by using cluster random sampling. The instrument that the researcher used is Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) and a reading achievement test. The data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula.
Based on statistical analysis, the researchers found that there was no correlation between students' personality and their reading achievement. It can be seen the coefficient of correlation r-value (-0.032) was lower than r-table (0.288). Then the level probably (p) significance sig 2-tailed was 0,827 that was higher than 0,050. It indicated that there was no significant correlation between the students’ personality type and their reading achievement.
