Abstract

Revy Wahyu Rakhmadiah, 2023 : The Implementation of Self-Talk Strategy in Improving Students’ Speaking Skill at Seventh Grade of SMPN 3 Jember in 2022/2023 Academic Year
Key words: Speaking skill, self-talk strategy
. Based on the preliminary observation, it showed that class of VII-A students had difficulty in learning English especially in practicing speaking. They say that speaking English is a difficult and complicated task. They find it strange if a friend tries to speak English in class and they are not used to it. Likewise, having the English learning process is tiresome for the students. After discussing with the English teacher, we decided on a strategy for implementing the self-talk strategy in the teaching and learning process.
Self-talk strategy is one of the appropriate ways to improve students' speaking skill. Self-talk can provide motivation and entertainment when learning English. Therefore, in this study the researcher used self-talk strategy to improve students' speaking skill. The research question of this research : “how was self-talk strategy able to improve speaking skill at seventh grade students of SMPN 3 Jember 2022/2023 Academic Year?”. The objective of the research was to investigate how teacher could improve speaking skill through Self-Talk Strategy at seventh grade students of SMPN 3 Jember.
The approach used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The design of classroom action research used in this research is collaborative classroom action research. Researchers conducted this research in class VII-A SMPN 3 Jember which consisted of 33 students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four steps, namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. To collect the data, the researcher used student speaking tests, interviews, field notes, and document reviews. The test is used to determine the increase in students' speaking ability after conducting research. The criteria of success in this research were if the students reached the minimum score (75) equal to or higher than 60%. The result of cycle one showed that 40% passed the criteria of success. It meant 13 students passed the criteria of success with 73,5 as the average score in cycle one. While the second cycle showed that there was 87% had passed the criteria of success. It meant that 29 students passed the criteria of success with a 83,1 average score. It could be said successful.
Based on the results, it was concluded that students were interested in learning by conducting the self-talk strategy and they felt enthusiastic in doing assignments since the researcher gave the large opportunity for the students freely practicing in talking. Class situation could also be handled well. The researcher also provides suggestions for future researchers to conduct better research and put more emphasis on the content and organization of speaking skills.
