Abstract

The Mistake Buster Technique is an effective method for improving students' involvement in the teaching-learning process and enhancing their understanding of the simple past tense in grammar. With this technique, students take an active role in correcting mistakes while the teacher acted as the mistake maker. This technique encourage students to participate more actively in their learning and helped them to remember and understand grammar rules in narrative text with ease. Students try to identify the mistakes in the narrative text themselves, which led to more questions and a stronger desire to learn.
This research has a research question, namely is there any significant effect of using mistake buster technique on students' mastery of simple past tense in narrative text at the eighth-grade students’ of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Sukowono Jember. So, this research aim to know whether there was or not the significant effect of using mistake buster technique on students’ mastery of simple past tense in narrative text at the eighth-grade students' of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Raudlatus Syabab Sukowono Jember.
A quantitative approach with a true experimental research design was used to investigate the topic. The population were the eighth grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Raudlatus Syabab Sukowono Jember. The researcher employed cluster random sampling, and the sample was determined by lottery. VIII A and VIII D as the sample of research. VIII A as the experimental class and VIII D as the control class. The experimental class was taught using the mistake buster technique, while the control class was taught using the lecturing method.
The test instrument included 20 multiple-choice questions on the simple past tense. The data was analyzed using the T-test formula. The preliminary-test mean score of the experimental class was 31.58 and the preliminary-test mean score of the control class was 31.05. Meanwhile the post-test mean score of the experimental class was 75.52, and the post-test mean score of control class was 62.1. In addition, it is proven that the independent t-test results showed that the 2-tailed significance was lower than 0.05 for the post-test. This indicated that there was a significant difference in the achievement between the experimental class taught with the mistake buster technique and the control class taught with the lecturing method.
