Abstract

Ahmad Wahdi Arif, Mentoring English Program to increase Santri’s English proficiency at Pesantren Madinatul Ulum

Pesantren has various types, namely Pesantren Salaf, semi-modern Islamic boarding schools, and modern Islamic boarding schools. The aim is for Islamic boarding schools not to be outdated and able to master various aspects of scientific fields. for example, Pesantren Madinatul Ulum which applies a semi-modern system so that it has various aspects of scientific programs, one of which is the English language program. The program takes the form of Mentoring, mentoring is the process of assisting mentors to mentees to achieve the goals of the program, both formal mentoring and non-formal mentoring. Therefore, researcher wants to investigate how and what the design and methods of developing the English Language mentoring program at Pesantren Madinatul Ulum.
This Research focus on how does design of Mentoring English Program at Pesatnren Madinatul Ulum and how Mentor guides Mentees In increasing Santri’s English proficiency. This research aims to find out how the English mentoring program at Pesantren Madinatul Ulum is designed to increase students' English proficiency and what kind of guiding by mentors in Increasing mentees in terms of methods, media and materials provided.
This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The Research Subjects are Mentors, Mentees of Intermediate Level and Chief of Mentors at English Program. data collection technique used Observation, Interview and Document Review. Data analysis technique used data condensation, data display and drawing/verifying conclusion. To check trustworthiness of data validity used source triangulation technique.
The result of this research is 1) Design of Mentoring English Program at Pesantren Madinatul Ulum is formal and Informal Mentoring. the formal mentoring divided by any Levels such as intermediate level which has three schedules of mentoring, that is Grammer class, speaking class and memorizing class. While informal mentoring is Making an English environment for emotional and practicing mentoring. 2) the main method used at Mentoring English Program is Memorizing, Practicing and accustomed a habitual action in English proficiency. The unique media used is Smart Dice Instruction for any activities Mentoring. the material used in Mentoring is New Concept Text Book.
