Abstract

Writing as a productive language skill plays an essential role in promoting language acquisition as learners experiment with words, sentences, and large chunks of writing to communicate effectively also to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary that they learn in the class. One of genres in writing that taught for the ninthgrade studentswas descriptive text. Descriptive text is a text that describes the features of someone, something, or a certain place. There were two research questions in this research, those were: (1) How is the student’s ability in writing the descriptive text at ninth grade of MTsN 1 Bondowoso? and (2) What types of descriptive text are represented in the student’s worksheets at ninth grade of MTsN 1 Bondowoso? The objectives of this research were: 1) To find out the student’s ability in writing the descriptive text at ninth grade of MTsN 1 Bondowoso and 2) To find out the types of descriptive text are represented in the student’s worksheets at ninth grade of MTsN 1 Bondowoso. This research used qualitative as the approach in analyzing student’s worksheets. Document analysis was used in collecting the data. The data of this research was the student’s worksheets especially paragraphs of descriptive text. After analyzing the data, the researcher found some findings: 1) Student’s ability in writing from five aspects of writing in composing paragraph especially descriptive text was good level classification. Vocabulary, they good enough in vocabularies, it means they had known well what are part of speech from the vocabularies. Grammar, some of them confused in using syntatic pattern of grammar and adjusting pronoun with the auxiliary verb. Mechanic, there were also many mistakes in mechanic aspect especially punctuation and capitalization. Content, they were able to compose descriptive text that relevant to the assigned topic. Organization of ideas, most of them compose descriptive text with complete organization of ideas those were identification and description. This research found from 23 students, 3 students belonging to the excellent level, 16 students were belonging to the good level, and 4 students were belonging to an adequate level classification. This research also found types of descriptive were represented in the student’s worksheets. 2) There were three types of descriptive text found in student’s worksheets. Those were description of person, description of thing, and description of place. Based on the finding from 23 student’s worksheets, description of person was the most dominant types of descriptive text represented in student’s worksheets. It was represented from 9 student’s worksheets. The second was description of thing that represented from 7 student’s worksheets. The third was description of place that represented from 7 student’s worksheets. Keywords: writing ability, descriptive text
