Abstract

Relating the important of writing skill to learn English in academic, writing helps the students to think more clearly and deeply. Writing skills in English include sufficient knowledge and ability to express thoughts and ideas in written words. Some specific writing skills include grammar,vocabulary,organization, and content of writing. The students can improve writing skills by guided writing procedure through pre writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Moreover, writing skill as one of the 4 important basic skills in English, therefore the main objective of writing is directed to improve students‟ skill in English.
The purpose of this research was to improve students‟ writing skill by using GWP guided writing procedure at 8th grade of SMPN 11 Jember, who had a problem in writing. Based on the interview with the English teacher that the students‟ writing was still low that was percentage 40% or 12 students who passed the KKM score and the average score was 71,8. It happen because the students got a problem in writing skill. The student could not write the sentence based on the Grammar, Vocabulary, Organization, Content, after discussing with the English teacher, we decided to implement a GWP strategy to teach writing and could solve the writing problem in the class. The research question of this research was “ How could the Implementation of GWP strategy improve students‟ writing skill at the 8th grade of Junior High school 11 Jember ?
The study used Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research design was a collaborative classroom action research. The participants of this research were the students of 8th F of SMPN 11 Jember in which consisted of 30 students. The research was carried out in one cycle, which consisted of planning, implementing,observing and reflecting. Data collecting techniques used in this research were students‟ writing test, observation, interview, and field note. This research used
content validity, which involved the English teacher as validator of the writing test. The criteria of success in this research were if the students reached the KKM score (75) are equal to and higher than 65% of total students in this research. The result of students‟ writing test score after the cycle showed that the average score was 76 and or 24 students who passed the KKM and for students who did not pass the KKM was or 6 students. It could be said that the Implementation of GWP strategy improve students‟ writing skill at the 8th grade of Junior High school 11 Jember was successful.
The observation result showed that was concluded by applying GWP the students could arrange and write the sentence based on the grammar, and the word could be structure, they could catch the point of teacher explanation. The researcher also gave suggestion for the further researcher to conduct research on other skills with other strategies or media in teaching and learning English.
