Abstract
Mahmud Abū Rayyah is a hadith observer and researcher who is considered as an inkār al-sunnah. It is because he criticizes matan hadith of the Prophet a lot. Based on the argument above, the researcher is interested in observing how Abū Rayyah uses his matan hadith criticism method.
The method that will be used in this research is content analysis method with a historical approach, in order to find out Abu Rayyah's biography, social background and thoughts. And Suryadi's matan criticism theory is the basis for finding Abū Rayyah's matan hadith criticism method, they are : (1) examining with verses of the Qur'an; (2) examining with more authentic hadiths; (3) examining with ratio or knowledge; (4) examining with historical facts.
The findings of this study are (1) The method used by Abū Rayyah to criticize the matan hadith is the same as Suryadi's theory of matan hadith criticism (2) The background of social life shapes Abū Rayyah's critical personality (3) Abu Rayyah's matan criticism method reaped many contradictions. So, he indirectly opened up the opportunities to develop critical insights on hadith studies.
