Writing has been widely conceptualized as a process of writer communicating something to readers whether through paper or digital format. Writing is an essential skill because it allows students to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. However, some students have some difficulties to write well in their learning process. While much research has investigated the use of note taking strategy in general to facilitate language learning, little is known how note taking strategy to mediate secondary school students to write a cohesive descriptive paragraph.
This case study aims to explore note taking strategy to mediate secondary school students to write a cohesive descriptive paragraph. The goal was to develop a more effective note taking strategy that could be implemented to mediate secondary school students to write a cohesive descriptive paragraph.
The researcher took qualitative approach with case study as the research design. This research project was conducted in one of the junior high schools in Jember. The participants involved were taken from 7th grade with 32 students. The data collected was obtained from three techniques which involves collecting data through interviews, observations, and document analysis. These data were processed and analyzed using an interactive model adopted from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana.
Overall, there are three findings from this study which include the main findings to answer: 1) students' engagement in writing through text modeling; 2) peer and teacher reviewing as immediate constructive feedback; 3) note taking strategy mediating cohesive paragraph writing. In conclusion, the research demonstrated that note taking strategy can mediate secondary school students to write a cohesive descriptive paragraph.
