As an English foreign learner (EFL), the learners feel that the most common problem is learning English is speaking. In developing speaking skills, the students must focus on produce sounds because it impacts learners’ communicative competence and performance. As a foreign language learner, the thing that must be considered is having a good ability in communication because most foreign language learners have difficulty pronouncing words in English. One of the ways is by using homophone games. A homophone game is a game that naturally can be used to help the students pronounce and memorize the vocabulary that have the same pronunciation but different meaning.
The research question in this research focused on: how is the implementation of Homphone Games to Improve Students’ lexical mastery at Seventh-Grade Studets’ of Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri 1 Peterongan Jombang? This study investigates how implementing homophone games improves students’ lexical mastery at Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri 1 Peterongan Jombang academic year 2023/2024.
This research was conducted in class VII-A SMP Negeri 1 Peterongan. The subject of this research consists of 32 students. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) using Kemmis and Mc Taggart, which consisted of four steps: plan, action, observe, and reflect. In this research, the researcher conducted two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings.
The result of students’ scores shows that the students’ average scores keep improving in every test. The student’s average score in the pre-test was 49,84. Seven students (21,8%) passed the Minimum Criterion Scores (70). In the post-test I in cycle I, it was shown that the average score was 63,90. There were 15 students (46,8%) who passed the minimum Criterion Scores (70). In the post-test II in cycle II, it was shown that the average score was 76,5. There were 26 students (81,2%) who passed the minimum Criterion Scores (70). The result of this research states that after calculating the data, the students’ lexical mastery improvement through implementing Homophone Games from the pre-tes to post-tes II is 53,49%. It concludes that implementing Homophone Games to improve students’ lexical mastery in the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Peterongan can help students improve their lexical mastery.
