Abstract

Education plays pivotal role in shaping individuals and societies. Education does not only refer to activities done at formal setting such as school, but also beyond the schools. The intersection of education and popular culture, notably through movies, has garnered attention in recent years. This study explores the educational value embedded in the movie "Upside Down Magic," focusing on character education. In a society where media consumption is prevalent, understanding the impact of cinematic narratives on character development is imperative.
The research analyzes character education values portrayed in "Upside Down Magic". The research question of this research is; 1) what are the character educational values in a movie entitled Upside Down Magic?; Accordingly, this research has purpose to find out and describe the character educational values in a movie entitled Upside Down Magic. Meanwhile, the principles by Thomas Lickona served as the fundamental values upon which the research is built.
This research employs a qualitative approach by describing the values found in the movie and utilizing in-depth interviews with high school students as the target demographic audience. These interviews aim to gather the perceptions insights on how character education messages in "Upside Down Magic" are perceived and internalized.
Analysis of "Upside Down Magic" reveals its portrayal of virtue as a foundational element for character development. The findings have significant meaning for the discourse of character education and the role of movies in shaping moral landscapes and perceptions. This research contributes to understanding how movies serve as instruments for character development, expanding the educational thoughts. Further research incorporating diverse audience perspectives and integrating qualitative methods could enhance our understanding of this evolving field.
