Vocabulary is one of the important components in teaching English, in addition to other components such as structure, pronunciation and others. it was explained that the most basic thing in learning English is the mastery of vocabulary as a standard of competence that students must master in learning English. Therefore, a person will not be able to communicate in the target language if their vocabulary were inadequate. Mastery of extensive vocabulary makes people easy to communicate with each other.
The problem of this research was formulated as “How is TGT game able to improve student’s vocabulary mastery in the First Grade at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Unggulan Al-Qodiri 1 Jember?”.
This research aims at Improving Student’s Vocabulary Mastery by Using Team Games Tournament (TGT) since it was found that there was a problem in vocabulary mastery faced by the students in the first grade at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Unggulan Al-Qodiri 1 Jember. The objective of this research was to describe how TGT game able to improve vocabulary mastery in the First Grade at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Unggulan Al-Qodiri 1 Jember.
The research used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) by Kemmis and McTaggart which entailed: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. There was only one cycle which consisted of a pretest, three meetings of the media implementation and a post-test. In order to collect the data, the researcher used the students’ vocabulary mastery test results (pretest and posttest), interview and document review.
The results of this research indicated that there was improvements in students’ vocabulary mastery. It was proven by the data showed that there were 21 students or 88,57% of the total students who scored equal to or higher than the Minimum Passing Score (KKM) and most students gave positive responses to the implementation of Team Games Tournament. Those results showed that there was an improvement of scores on students’ vocabulary mastery at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Unggulan Al-Qodiri 1 Jember.
