Abstract

Mutammimah, 2021: The Effect of Using English Short Story to Increase Students’ Listening Ability at 8th Grade of MTs AnNajahiyyah Pakistaji 2020/2021 Academic Year Keywords: English short story, Listening ability Listening is the most important skill in English learning. The survey showed that 55% of students’ communication time was spent listening, 17% for reading, 16% for speaking, and 11% for writing. This is because in process of English learning students often use listening skill more than other skills. The fact, there were a lot of students who got difficulty in the listening activity. According to this problem, the English teacher should found an appropriate media to make students more interested in the listening activity. The aim of this research was to analyze whether there was an effect of using English short story to increase students’ listening ability at 8th grade of MTs An-Najahiyyah Pakistaji 2020/2021 academic year. The research method used was quantitative true experimental and applied pretest-posttest control group design. The researcher used two classes for study, the experimental class and the control class. The number of students in the experimental class was 14 students and the number of students in the control class was 14 students. Research instrument used in this research was test to measure students’ listening ability. The data analysis technique used in this research was descriptive statistical technique with hypothesis testing using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The average score of student’s listening ability in the experimental class was 44.29 and the control class was 46.43. But, after the researcher did treatment using English short story to the experimental class, the average score of the posttest in the experimental class has an increased score from 44.29 to 82.14, while in the control class showed that the average score of the posttest was 70.71. It showed that the students’ score in experimental class were higher than students’ score in control class. From the result of statistical analysis of paired sample T-Test, the result of significance value (2-tailed) for pair 1 was 0.000 < 0.05 so null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. And from the results of the independent T-Test, the results obtained the significance value (2 tailed) was 0.000 < 0.05 then null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It meant that there was a significant effect in the use of English short story in increasing students’ listening ability. From the data presented, it could be interpreted that the use of English short story was more effective in increasing students’ listening ability than without using English short story.
