Abstract

Indana Bintan Zakiyyah, 2020: The Effect of Jumbled Sentences in Students’ Writing Skill at Seventh Grade of MTs Bustanul Ulum Bulugading Keywords: Students’ Writing Skill, Jumbled Sentences English has an important role in our life. Writing is one of the four skills in learning English that plays an important role in communication. It is used to share ideas and feeling. However, there are some obstacles faced in teaching and learning English. Especially in the writing learning activity. Based on the preliminary study, it was found that many students have difficulties in writing skill. Many students got under the criteria of minimum writing score determined by the school. The jumbled sentences technique is believed to help students to share their ideas more clearly and their long-term writing development. The research question was, “Do the students taught writing skill through Jumbled Sentences achieve better than those taught writing skills using the lecturing technique?”. This research aimed to investigate whether the use of jumbled sentences give an effect or not on students’ writing skill at the Seventh Grade of MTs Bustanul Ulum Bulugading. This research used the quantitative approach and used an experimental research design. The researcher focused on conducting experiments using jumbled sentences on students’ writing skills in MTs Bustanul Ulum Bulugading. The researcher used 2 classes as a control class and an experimental class. The experimental class got a treatment using jumbled sentences in the learning and teaching process, while the control class did not. The researcher used pre-test and post-test to the students to collect the data. After collecting data, the researcher analyzed data by using Mann-Whitney Test to know the difference between experimental and control class in the pre-test and the post-test. The result of this research showed that the mean score were statistically significant difference in students' writing skill. The result of the mean score of the students who were taught using the Jumbled Sentences Technique got a better score than those taught writing skill using the lecturing technique. It was found that students' mean score of pre-test in the experimental class were 10.78 and mean score of post-test were 30.23. While the mean score of pre-test in the control class were 14.48 and the mean score of post-test were 26.53. Based on the mean score of the pre-test and post-test in the experimental and control class, it can be concluded that the students taught writing skill through jumbled sentences achieved better than those taught writing skill using the lecturing technique.
