Abstract

Ahmad Mutawakkil, 2021: An Analysis of Students’ Speaking Anxiety Faced By Seventh Grade Students of Sekolah Menengah Pertama Plus Darus Sholah and Strategies to Overcome It. Thesis, English education Department, Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty, State Institute of Islamic Studies of Jember. Advisor: Nina Hayuningtyas, M.Pd. Academic Year 2020-2021 Key Words: Students’ Speaking Anxiety, Speaking Anxiety. Speaking is one of English skills that must be learnt by students. However, there are some problems faced by the students in learning speaking. One of them is feeling anxious when they had to speak especially in front of the class. The aim of this research was to describe the students' speaking anxiety and the strategies to overcome it. This research used qualitative descriptive as the research method. The Researcher chose the seventh grade students of SMP Plus Darus Sholah as the research subjects, with the total number of population was 32 students. The data was gathered by observation, interview and document review. From the data analysis and observation, the Researcher found the conclusion of students' speaking anxiety and the strategy to overcome it, they were communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, fear of mistakes and low of proficiency, while the strategies were doing well preparation, relaxation and approaching. The conclusion of this research informed that the speaking anxiety could obstruct the students' speaking performance. Thus, the strategies were needed to ease the students speaking.
