Abstract

This research was discussing about speech act analysis produced by student peer discussion in high school English class. During teaching and learning activities discussion is always happen in the classroom such as peer discussion or group discussion. The research conducted at MAN 1 Jember especially in XI BIC 1, which is science program. BIC is the favorite program there because the student prepared for competition at senior high school event. By those case, researcher want to explore what the types that produced by the students when they role as peer discussion.
This research was exploring about types of speech act produced by the students in high school English class. Due to, types of speech act among peer discussion never explored in English especially in high school English foreign language class. This research also aims explore how the way they use speech act in peer discussion. Owing to, speech act exploring in class often between student and teacher. So, in this research researcher want to examine among peer discussion.
This research used purposive sampling with 4 participants from 32 students. Those 4 students were divided in peer become two peers. The discussion held at MAN 1 library in English language subject time. The discussion was occurred around 180 minutes from start to finish. The topic discussion was about mental health. The discussion was record by phone and transcript wrote in document file. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design, ensuring that all explanations were based on detailed descriptions.
The finding of this research was assertive that types of speech act most appeared and stating was the strategy most used. Speaker most conveyed fact about his experiences, stating agreement, and stating fact about real condition that happened. By those data, during discussion occurred in high school English class, student prefer to share their experience in something, stating agreement about something and stating about real condition happen or current situation. Influenced by the topic discussion, discussion in high school class great to bring topic related to them or what are topic they were interest can make discussion in high English class more attractive.
