Abstract

Ul’yatul Muhimmah, 2025: Students’ Interest in Learning English Based on Merdeka Curriculum in the 4th Grade Students at SDN Penataan, Pasuruan.
Key Words: students’ interest in learning English, merdeka curriculum

At SDN Penataan, English has recently been reintroduced following the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, as it was previously excluded from the 2013 Curriculum (K13). Based on preliminary research, it was found that SDN Penataan has only recently begun implementating the Merdeka Curriculum in stages. In the fisrt year, it was apllied to grades 1 and 4; and so on. This staged implementation means that in 2024 4th grade students were experiencing English lesson for the first time, as they never received English lesson under the previous curriculum (K13). This condition presents a unique opportunity to explore how these students develop interest in learning English from the ground up, making the 4th grade an ideal focus for this study.
The research focus form as follows: 1) How is students’ interest in learning English based on Merdeka Curriculum? 2) How does the teacher attract students’ interest in the 4th grade students of SDN Penataan, Pasuruan? Then, the research objectives are: 1) to describe the students’ interest in learning English using Merdeka Curriculum. 2) To describe the teacher strategies to attract the students’ interest in the 4th grade of SDN Penataan.
This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive deign to explore students’ interest in learning Englis. The subjects of this research consist of an English teacher and the 4th grade students at SDN Penataan, Pasuruan. The data are collected through observation, interview, and document review. The data analysis is conducted using analysis techniques from Miles Huberman; data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing/ verification. The data validity was clarified from source triangulation and technique triangulation.
The findings of the research including; 1) Students’ interest in learning English, were: a) The students were ready to received the lesson by showing enthusiasm and readiness when English lessons were about to begin; b) the students showed a high frequency of attendance and active participation in the lesson; c) the students are able to provide relevant answers and make an effort to respond in English; d) the students showed great enthusiasm in answering questions by quickly raising their hands.; e) the students attention was effectivelycaptured through the use of ice- breaking activities and games integrated into the lesson; f) the students completed the tasks well and always submitted them on time; g) the students showed interest in answering questions by respinding calmly and thoughtfully, and they even asked for more opportunities to receive questions from the teacher. 2) The teacher’s strategies to attract students’ learning interest in the 4th grade students were: a) the teacher used a variety of learning methods, including lectures, Q&A, and the Total Physical Response (TPR) metod; b) the teacher motivated the students by providing ice-breaking activities and quizzes, which increased their interest in learning; c) the teacher managed the class effectively through careful planning, conducting the core activities, evaluating students, and arranging the students’ setaing; d) the teacher designed learning media that was appropriate and aligned with the theme being taught; e) the teacher gave praise to students who completed tasks or answered questions correctly; f) the teacher created study group to encourage students to learn together with their friends at home.
