This research has a background that investigates the perceptions of good adult learners regarding the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method, focusing on speaking skills at LPK Duta Sakti Mandiri. Unlike previous research that often groups all adult learners or focuses on the younger population, this study specifically targets good adult learners as a distinct group. Communication and interaction are vital parts of society, and English has become an essential international language for everything from education to business. Learning English goes beyond just words; it's about understanding how to communicate effectively in different situations. At institutions like LPK Duta Sakti Mandiri, which offers non-formal education, Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is used to help students, especially adults, improve their speaking skills through activities like role-playing and group work. While CLT is popular and effective, particularly for motivated adult learners, most research looks at all adults generally. This study, however, aims to specifically understand how "good adult learners"—those who are naturally motivated and good at learning and benefit from the CLT method.
The focus of the problem being researched in this thesis is 1) How does the perception of good adult learners of using CLT at LPK Duta Sakti Mandiri. 2) What are the factors that contribute to learning English while using CLT in good adult learners at LPK Duta Sakti Mandiri. 3) What are the specific procedures for using CLT at LPK Duta Sakti Mandiri. The purpose of the research in this thesis is as follows: 1) Identifying the perception of good adult learners on using the CLT method. 2) Determining the factors that contribute to good adult learners while using the CLT. 3) finding the specific procedure of CLT that is effective and beneficial for good adult learners.
This study’s methodology is a qualitative descriptive research approach. This study was conducted at LPK Duta Sakti Mandiri, which has the subject of categorizing good adult learners. The data collection techniques in this study were interviews and observation. The data in this research was analyzed through interactive analysis according to Miles and Huberman. The Validity data researcher used source triangulation and method triangulation.
Key findings indicate that most good adult learners have a positive perception of using CLT. This positive perception is influenced by both internal and external factors. Internal factors include strong learning motivation, often tied to career aspirations, and psychological factors like interest and talent, which make them enthusiastic about the informal and innovative nature of CLT. External factors include a supportive socio-cultural environment and instrumental factors like beneficial course programs and active, facilitative teachers. The most effective CLT procedures identified include clear material explanation by teachers, group activities, opportunities for consultation, performance evaluation, and constructive feedback. The study result that CLT effectively enhances speaking skills and is well-received by self-motivated adult learners due to its practical communication focus, active learning opportunities, and relevant tasks.
