Abstract

Vitamin C has properties as reducing agents that can function in the absorption of iron. This study aims to determine the effect of vitamin C supplementation to increase iron absorption in administration of ferrous sulfate tablets in pregnant mother. The design in this study was a pretestpostest experiment with a control group. The research was conducted on 24 respondents taken by simple random sampling technique. From the result of data analysis test after iron tablet administration got the average plasma iron concentration: 64,08 mg/dl for control group; and for each treatment group: 161,02 mg/dl for supplementation 100 mg vitamin C, 254.98 mg/dl for vitamin C supplementation 200 mg, 255,73 mg/dl for vitamin C supplementation 200 mg. From the Anova test, shows that F count is greater than F table, showing the effect of vitamin C supplementation to increase iron absorption in administration of ferrous sulfate tablet in pregnant mother. Then, from LSD 5% found the most effective and efficient vitamin C content in increasing the absorption of iron is 200 mg vitamin C. Absorption of iron in administration of ferrous sulfate tablets in pregnant mother can be increased three to fourfold with vitamin C supplementation, the administration of ferrous sulfate tablets should not be given every day, just once every three days because of excess Iron plasma will be stored as reserve Iron ( ferritin) that can be recycled back into Iron if the body needs it.
