Abstract
AsnahNurulKhatijah, 2021. Enhancing Students’ Speaking Ability trough Hand Puppet Story Telling at Madrasah Aliyah Annuriyah in Jember. Key Words: Speaking ability, hand puppet story telling This research was about enhancing students’ speaking ability through hand puppet story telling at the X grade MIA (Matematika dan Ilmu Alam) of MA Annuriyah Jember. This study was done based on the problems found in English speaking skill at the first grade of MA Annuriyah Jember. Based on the data of preliminary study, it was found that the pre-test score was 40% and the previous semester score was 27% with 67, 33 as the average score, that was a very low score. There were 5 students from 18 students passed the test. From those scores, it is noticed that most of those students entered the next grade of the English class with very limited speaking skill caused by some reasons, such as having less ability in speaking comprehension, having less level of confidence, and having less level of courage. Hence, the researcher decided to enhance student’s speaking skill by using hand puppet story telling. This research was conducted at class X MIA of MA Annuriyah Jember. This research was classified as Classroom Action Research (CAR) of Kemmish and Taggart which consist of four procedures, namely planning the action, implementing the action, observing and reflecting. In this research, the researcher conducted one cycle. The cycle applied on March 2020 which consisted of four meetings, three meetings to implement the action and one meeting to student’s speaking test. To collect the data, the researcher used the student’s speaking test or post test, observation, interview, and document review. The test was used to find out the improvement of students’ speaking ability after implementing the action. In addition, after implementing the action, the result of the implementation of hand puppet story telling indicated that there were improvements of student’s speaking ability. It was proven by the data showed that 77% of students had passed the criteria of success with 80, 0 as the average score. The research would success if there was 70% of students could pass the test score that was 73 based on the agreement of the researcher and the collaborator. According to data analysis process, it was concluded that students were interested in learning by using hand puppet story-telling and they felt enthusiastic in doing the task. So, the teaching learning process ran well and students enjoyed the learning activity. The classroom situation also could be handled well.
