Abstract

Based on preliminary research, researcher found at SMPN 6 Jember students come from different background and English proficiency levels. Furthermore, students’ English exposure outside classroom reminds limited. In response this challenge teacher often employed code-switching as strategy that appropriate with students’ needs. Therefore, this study explores the implementation of code-switching as a pedagogical strategy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom, focusing on teacher practices and student comprehension in a multilingual setting.
Thus, the research question of this study were how English teachers are practiced code-switching in multilingual classroom, how do students’ respond the code-switching used by teacher and how is the role of code-switching in understanding instruction and learning materials. Therefore, this study aims to explore the teacher’s practice and responses of students in understanding instruction and material.
This study employed a qualitative case study design, allowing the researcher to explore the teacher’s practices in an in-depth and contextual manner. The subject was selected through purposive sampling, involving two English teacher who teaches nineth grade students and ten ninth grade students at SMPN 6 Jember. The data analysis applied Miles and Huberman’s theory, which includes data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. To ensure the validity of data, the researcher used source triangulation and technique triangulation.
The research shows that teachers use code-switching through two main approaches, which involve starting with English switch and using Indonesian as the main language to control English usage. The educational purposes of code-switching include making directions clearer and teaching difficult words and sentence structures. It also includes creating a positive learning environment and helping students understand better. The student feedback showed strong positive results because learners from various skill levels reported better understanding, increased self-assurance, and active engagement through code-switching techniques. Therefore, code-switching gives students better understanding instruction and material explanation.
The study concludes that code-switching is an effective and inclusive pedagogical tool that bridges linguistic gaps, facilitates meaningful interaction, and supports the achievement of learning objectives in multilingual EFL contexts. The research results provide useful information for EFL educators while advancing academic knowledge about adaptive language teaching methods in various learning settings.
