Abstract

Today, violence are still easily found in education; in the form of physical, psychological and symbolic one. Those two mentioned first are well identified and observed, while symbolic violence is often considered as normal, reasonable and intangible. Symbolic violence occurs in the teacher-student relation in education. This is indicated by the pressure on student with order, prohibition or other actions that aimed to control student behaviorstrictly for certain purpose. The risk of symbolic violence is that student, as the victim, does not realize on this violence and accept it as reasonable matter. This article discusses (1) symbolic violence forms of teacher-student relation in education, (2) the factors causing symbolic violence of teacher-student relation in education, (3) the impact of symbolic violence on teacher-student relation in education and (4) solution to symbolic violence of teacher-student relation in education. Symbolic violence of teacher-student relation in education are identified in the forms of orders, prohibitions, beliefs, and rewards. This phenomenon is caused by the unequal patternof teacher-student relations. Teacher authority to manage learning process in class possibly restrains student‟sfreedom to think and act, curiosity and creativity. To resolve this, teacher is encouraged to stimulate student autonomy by giving order or assignment that motivate student to do the task willingly.
