Abstract

ABSTRACT
Tifa Nur Fadillah, 2026 : Interjections Analysis in English Textbook
Entitled:Pathway to English for Senior High School Students
Keywords : Interjections,Pragmatic,Textbook as a Learning Material

Interjections play an important role in English communication
because they serve to express emotions, attitudes, and interactional meaning in spoken language. In the context of English language learning in the classroom, students are expected not only to be able to recognize interjections but also to understand their types and functions in communication. Thus, the research questions of this study were: what types of interjections are found in the textbook Pathway to English, and how are the functions and meanings of those interjections that represented
in the textbook. This study aimed to identify and classify the
types,functions,and meanings of interjections.
This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The
data were collected through document analysis of conversational texts in
Units 1–6 of the textbook Pathway to English, supported by a brief
interview with an English teacher to provide contextual information
regarding the use of the textbook in classroom practice. The data source consisted of utterances containing interjections identified in the selected units. The data analysis followed three steps: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. To ensure the validity of the data, the researcher applied source triangulation and technique triangulation. The results of the research were as follows; (1) the identification of
interjections in the textbook Pathway to English revealed three main types, namely primary interjections, secondary interjections, and interjective formulae. (2) the analysis of functions and meanings showed that interjections serve various pragmatic roles, including expressing emotional
reactions, managing discourse, showing agreement, maintaining social interaction, encouraging and persuading others, seeking confirmation, expressing evaluation, and indicating cognitive processing.(3) the overall findings indicate that the use of interjections in the textbook reflects natural spoken language and support the development of students communicative and pragmatic competence.
