Abstract
Syahlu Rohima Febriyanti (2026): The Implementation of the English Language
Program in Supporting Students’ Vocabulary and Speaking Skills at Pesantren
Baitul Arqom Jember
Keywords: Vocabulary Practice, Speaking Skills, English Language Program,
Pondok Pesantren, Qualitative Study
This research describes the implementation of the English Language Program in
supporting students’ vocabulary development and speaking skills at Pesantren
Baitul Arqom Jember. Although the pesantren has implemented various English
language activities to support language learning, students still experience
difficulties in using vocabulary and communicating effectively in English.
Furthermore, the bilingual environment creates additional challenges for students
in improving their English speaking habits. Therefore, this study aims to describe
the implementation of the program and identify the challenges faced by students
in developing their vocabulary and speaking skills.
This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a narrative design.
Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation.
The research subjects consisted of students and language division supervisors
(OSBA mentors) involved in the English language program at Pesantren Baitul
Arqom. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model,
which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The validity
of the data was established through triangulation of sources and methods.
The findings reveal that the English language program at Pesantren Baitul Arqom
is implemented through four main activities: daily vocabulary memorization,
conversation practice, watching movie, and muhadloroh (public speaking). These
activities are integrated into students’ daily routines and are supervised by OSBA
mentors to ensure correct pronunciation and active language use. The program
contributes positively to students’ vocabulary development and speaking skills by
providing consistent exposure, contextual practice, and authentic communicative
opportunities. However, the study also identifies several challenges, including the
lack of student discipline due to insufficient deterrent punishments, limited
parental support for language rule enforcement, limited time for the moviewatching
program, students’ lack of seriousness during vocabulary and
conversation sessions, and students’ low self-confidence and fear of making
mistakes when speaking English.
