Abstract

ABSTRACT
Natasha Early Fridanuari, 2026: An Analysis of Molina and Albir’s
Translation Techniques in the Subtitle of Maleficent.
Keywords: Translation, Translation Techniques, Meanings, Subtitle, Maleficent.
Translation plays an important role in helping audiences understand
messages in foreign films through subtitles. In subtitle translation, translators do
not only transfer language, but also need to pay attention to meaning, context, and
readability so that the message can be understood clearly by the audience. In
addition, subtitles must be concise and synchronized with the dialogue due to
space and time limitations, which makes the translation process more complex.
Therefore, translators are required to choose appropriate techniques to ensure that
the original message, nuance, and intention of the dialogue are conveyed
accurately and naturally. Based on this consideration, this study focuses on
analyzing the translation techniques and types of meaning found in the Indonesian
subtitles of the movie Maleficent.
This study aims to identify the translation techniques used and the types of
meaning found in the Indonesian subtitles of the movie Maleficent. The research
questions of this study are: (1) What translation techniques proposed by Molina
and Albir‟s are used in the Indonesian subtitles of Maleficent? and (2) How do
these translation techniques types in transferring the meaning and nuances of the
original dialogue into the target language?
This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from
SubtitleCat, This study applied Molina and Albir‟s (2002) theory of translation
techniques and Abdul Chaer (2014) theory of meaning. The data were analyzed by
identifying the translation techniques and types of meaning found in the subtitles.
The findings of this study show that there are nine translation techniques
used in the Indonesian subtitles of Maleficent, namely reduction, modulation,
borrowing, established equivalent, linguistic compression, literal translation,
transposition, linguistic amplification, and adaptation. Among these, established
equivalent is the most dominant technique, indicating that the translator mainly
uses common and natural expressions in Indonesian, while linguistic amplification
is the least used. Other techniques such as borrowing and modulation are applied
to maintain meaning and naturalness, and reduction is used to adjust subtitle
limitations. In terms of meaning, denotative meaning dominates with 71 data, as
most dialogues are direct and informative, whereas connotative meaning appears
in 9 data, mainly in emotional or implied expressions. These findings indicate that
the translation focuses on clarity and readability while still conveying emotional nuances
