This study aims to analyze lexical differences found in Tere Liye's novel Bumi and its English translation Earth translated by Gill Westaway. The objectives of this research are to identify lexical differences between the source language and target language texts, examine how lexical meaning is adapted and maintained during the translation process, and investigate translation shifts and equivalence strategies applied by the translator.
The research focuses on identifying lexical meaning between Bumi and its English translation Earth and analyzing how the translator adapts and maintains lexical meaning during the translation process. Accordingly, the study aims to identify the types of lexical meaning and examine the strategies used to preserve meaning in the target language.
This research employed a qualitative approach using content analysis design. The data sources were taken from chapter 1 up to 3 of Bumi and its English translation Earth. The data consisted of words, phrases, and sentences that demonstrated lexical differences, semantic adaptation, translation shifts, and equivalence. Data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using semantic theories proposed by Geoffrey Leech and F. R. Palmer, translation shift theory by J. C. Catford, and equivalence theory by Eugene A. Nida and Charles R. Taber. To ensure trustworthiness, theoretical triangulation and expert judgment were applied.
The findings reveal that lexical meanig occurred mainly in semantic relationships and contextual meaning. Semantic relationships consisted of synonymy, antonymy, and hyponymy, with synonymy appearing most frequently. Contextual meaning differences were influenced by emotional nuances, situational context, and cultural adaptation. The study also identified four types of translation shifts: structural shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts. Furthermore, the findings indicate that dynamic equivalence was applied more frequently than formal equivalence, showing that the translator prioritized communicative meaning, readability, and naturalness for target language readers.
The study concludes that literary translation involves not only linguistic transfer but also interpretation and adaptation of meaning influenced by semantic, contextual, and cultural factors. Despite lexical differences and translation shifts, the translator successfully maintained the core meaning and communicative effect of the original text.
