Abstract

Reading comprehension is one of the important skills in learning English
because it helps students understand information from written texts. However,
many students still face difficulties in comprehending English texts due to limited
vocabulary, low motivation, and less interactive learning media. In addition,
conventional teaching methods often make students feel bored and less engaged
during the learning process. Therefore, teachers need to use innovative and
interactive media to support students’ reading comprehension achievement. One
of the game-based learning media that can be used is Kahoot!.
Based on the background above, this study focused on answering the
following research question: “Is there any significant effect of using Kahoot! on
students’ reading comprehension at the seventh grade of MTs Nurul Huda Badean
Banyuwangi?”
Based on the research question, the objective of this study was to
determine whether there was a significant effect of using Kahoot! on students’
reading comprehension at the seventh grade of MTs Nurul Huda Badean
Banyuwangi.
This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design.
The population of this study was the seventh grade students of MTs Nurul Huda
Badean Banyuwangi. The sample consisted of an experimental class and a control
class. The experimental class was taught by using Kahoot!, while the control class
was taught by using a conventional method. The data were collected through pre-
test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics,
normality test, homogeneity test, and independent sample t-test through SPSS.
The results of this study showed that the students who were taught by
using Kahoot! achieved better improvement in reading comprehension compared
to those who were taught by using conventional methods. The result of the
independent sample t-test indicated that the significance value was lower than
0.05, which means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null
hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was a
significant effect of using Kahoot! on students’ reading comprehension at the
seventh grade of MTs Nurul Huda Badean Banyuwangi. In addition, Kahoot!
increased students’ motivation, participation, and enthusiasm during the learning
process.
