Abstract
Vocabulary is widely recognized as a foundational component of English language learning, yet many students in Islamic boarding school environments struggle to develop adequate vocabulary mastery due to limited learning resources and restricted access to digital technology. This study aimed to develop an English Vocabulary Pocket Book for ninth-grade students at SMP Islam An-Nur Rambipuji and to assess its feasibility in terms of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The development was motivated by three interconnected problems identified at the school: the absence of dedicated vocabulary learning media beyond standard textbooks, low student motivation toward English, and the Islamic boarding school environment's strict prohibition of digital devices.
The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method adapted from the Borg and Gall model, encompassing eight stages: research and information collecting, planning, product development, expert validation, product revision, preliminary field testing, main field testing, and final revision. Twenty students were selected as the main participants through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, expert validation forms, and vocabulary tests (pre-test and post-test).
The needs analysis revealed that students faced significant difficulties in vocabulary learning due to limited learning media, low motivation toward English, and restricted access to digital devices in the Islamic boarding school environment. In response, a printed pocket book was developed incorporating contextual vocabulary, basic grammar, daily expressions, and exercises aligned with students' daily life as santri. Two culturally familiar pedagogical strategies sorogan and peer tutoring were integrated into the product's implementation framework to support both independent and collaborative vocabulary learning.
Expert validation confirmed the product's high validity, with the material expert awarding a mean score of 5.00 and the media design expert awarding 4.71 both categorized as "Highly Valid." The preliminary field testing yielded an overall response score of 80.17% ("Good"), while the main field testing showed a student response score of 78.25% ("Good") and a teacher response score of 90.9% ("Very Good"), indicating strong practical acceptability. The effectiveness of the product was confirmed through an average N-Gain score of 0.73 (High category) and a paired-sample t-test result of Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000, demonstrating a statistically significant improvement in students' vocabulary mastery. Since Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05, H₀ is rejected and H₁ is accepted. In conclusion, the English Vocabulary Pocket Book is a feasible, practical, and effective learning media that can support vocabulary acquisition and independent learning in non-digital educational environments, particularly in Islamic boarding school settings.
