Language plays a crucial role in conveying meaning, particularly in literary works and song lyrics. This study contributes to the field of semantics, which examines how meaning is expressed through language. For students of the English Language Department, understanding meaning construction and interpretation is essential, including in song lyrics. Song lyrics function not only as entertainment but also as a medium of communication. This study focuses on two semantic aspects: lexical meaning, which refers to the dictionary meaning of words, and grammatical meaning, which arises from grammatical relationships within sentences. The song “Sofia the First” was selected because its lyrics present meaningful language that reflects the main character’s journey from an ordinary girl to a princess.
Thus, the research questions of this study were: 1) What lexical meanings are found in the lyrics of Sofia the First? and 2) What grammatical meanings are found in the lyrics of Sofia the First?. Furthermore, this study aimed to analyze the lexical and grammatical meanings found in the lyrics of the song Sofia the First.
This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using document analysis techniques. The data source consists of the lyrics of the song Sofia the First. The data collection process was carried out through reading, understanding, observing lyrics that contain lexical meaning and grammatical meaning. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data condensation, data display, and the drawing and verification of conclusions based on relevant theories.
The study concludes that: (1) lexical meaning in the lyrics of the song Sofia the First is found in various words and phrases that describe changes in life, a new environment, experiences, and the identity of the main character, (2) grammatical meaning in the song lyrics is demonstrated through the use of grammatical elements such as tense, pronoun, infinitive, aspect, future expression, preposition, and relative clause. These findings indicate that meaning in song lyrics is constructed not only through the basic meanings of the words used but also through the grammatical structures that support the conveyance of the song’s message.
