Abstract
Raden Muhammad Haidar Dzakwan Nabil, 2026: An Analysis of Lexical Density and Communication Competence in Formula 1 Team Radio Communication
Keywords: Lexical Density, Communication Competence, F1 Radio Communication
This study investigates the communication competence of radio communication between Formula 1 drivers and race engineers through the perspective of lexical density. Communication in Formula 1 requires language that is clear, concise, and informative due to the high pressure and time sensitive racing environment. Although previous studies have examined Formula 1 communication from pragmatic and linguistic perspectives, limited research has explored lexical density as an indicator of communication effectiveness in professional sports discourse.
This research aims to answer the following research question How is communication competence demonstrated in Formula 1 radio communication? The study aims to assess of radio communication competence between Formula 1 drivers and race engineers by analyzing the proportion is lexical density.
This study employs a qualitative descriptive method supported by quantitative analysis. The data were collected from Formula 1 radio communication transcripts obtained from official Formula 1 broadcasts and related media sources. The analysis focused on identifying content words and function words in each utterance to calculate lexical density. In addition, communication competence was analyzed through linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic aspects to assess communication effectiveness
The findings reveal that Formula 1 radio communication demonstrates a moderate level of lexical density, reflecting a balance between informational efficiency and clarity. The communication remains effective because the utterances are concise, context appropriate, and easily understood in high pressure racing situations.
