Abstract

Students’ motivation plays an important role in the success of English
language learning. However, low motivation often becomes a challenge in the
classroom. Therefore, teachers need effective strategies to create more engaging
learning experiences. One strategy is the use of learning videos, which combine
visual and auditory elements to support students’ understanding and interest in
learning English.
This study aimed to explore the strategies used in utilizing learning videos
to motivate students in learning English and to identify the challenges faced by the
teacher and the solutions applied. The research addressed two questions: how
learning videos were implemented to enhance students’ motivation and what
challenges emerged during their implementation.
This study employed a qualitative case study design. The participants were
one English teacher and students of class XI-3 at SMAN 5 Jember. Data were
collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and
documentation. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model,
consisting of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
Data validity was ensured through triangulation.
The findings showed that learning videos were implemented in three
stages: pre-activity, while-activity, and post-activity. The use of videos increased
students’ attention, engagement, confidence, and interest in learning English.
Videos also helped students understand learning materials more easily through
authentic and visual contexts. However, challenges such as unstable internet
connections, technical problems, time limitations, and inappropriate video
materials were encountered. To overcome these challenges, the teacher prepared
videos in advance, selected suitable materials, and provided supporting activities
during the learning process.
