Abstract

Keywords: English learning video, speaking skill, recount text, unforgettable experiences, quasi-experimental research.
English speaking skills are an important aspect of learning English. However, based on observations at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Hasanuddin Semboro, many eighth-grade students had difficulties in speaking English due to limited vocabulary, inaccurate pronunciation, lack of fluency, and low confidence. In addition, the teaching process was still dominated by conventional methods with limited use of learning media, causing students to be less active in speaking activities. Therefore, English learning videos were introduced as an alternative medium to improve students’ speaking skills.
This study aimed to determine the effect of using English learning videos on the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Hasanuddin Semboro, particularly in recount text material on the topic “Unforgettable Experiences.” The research question was: “Is there a significant effect of using English learning videos on students’ speaking skills?”
This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The sample consisted of class VIII A as the experimental class and class VIII B as the control class, with 25 students in each class. Data were collected through document review and a speaking post-test assessing pronunciation, fluency, and vocabulary. The data were analysed using normality, homogeneity, and independent sample t-tests through SPSS.
The results of the study showed that the mean difference between the experimental class and the control class was 6.680, which indicated that the speaking ability of students taught using English Learning Video was higher than that of students taught using conventional methods. The results of the Independent Samples t-test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.027, which was smaller than 0.05. Thus, H₀ was rejected and H₁ was accepted. This proves that the use of English Learning Video has a significant effect on improving the speaking ability of eighth grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Hasanuddin Semboro. These findings indicate that learning videos are an effective medium to help students improve their pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary mastery, and confidence in communicating using English.
