Abstract

Widiyana Agustin,2026: EFL Javanese and Madurese Students’ Perceptions Of
Their Dialectal Influence on English Pronunciation in Conversations.
Keywords: student perception, Javanese dialect, Madurese dialect, English
pronunciation, conversation.
Indonesia has approximately 700 regional languages, including Javanese and
Madurese. According to Amalia, the mother tongue is often also referred to as the
regional language where a child is born, so the language he or she uses is the
mother tongue. Previous studies have mainly focused on pronunciation errors and
first language interference among Indonesian EFL learners, while limited
attention has been given to students’ perceptions of how their local dialects
influence English pronunciation in conversations, particularly in comparative
studies involving both Javanese and Madurese learners. Therefore, this study aims
to explore EFL Javanese and Madurese students’ perceptions of their dialectal
influence on English pronunciation in conversations.
This study was guided by two main research questions: 1) How do Javanese EFL
students perceive the influence of their Javanese dialect on their English
pronunciation in conversations? 2) how do Madurese EFL students perceive the
influence of their Madurese dialect on their English pronunciations in
conversations? The research objective of this research were to explore Javanese
EFL students’ perceptions of the influence of their Javanese dialect on their
English pronunciation in conversations and to explore Madurese EFL students’
perceptions of the influence of their Madurese dialect on their English
pronunciation in conversations.
This study employed a quantitative survey research design. The participants
consisted of 47 including 23 Javanese and 24 Madurese students. Data were
collected through a questionnaire as the main instrument, supported by
pronunciation practice and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire
consisted of 18 statements measured using a five-point Likert scale. The collected
data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, including the mean and
standard deviation, while the pronunciation practice and interview findings were
used to support and interpret the quantitative results.
The findings revealed that Javanese EFL students had a high level of perception
regarding the influence of their Javanese dialect on English pronunciation, with a
mean score of 67.26 (SD = 6.655). Likewise, Madurese EFL students
demonstrated a high level of perception, with a mean score of 70.13 (SD = 9.848).
The pronunciation practice indicated that dialectal features were still evident in
students' English pronunciation, particularly in vowel pronunciation, consonant
pronunciation, intonation. The interview findings further confirmed that bothix
Javanese and Madurese students were aware that their native dialects continued to
influence their English pronunciation during conversations.
