Abstract

Lexical borrowing is the process of adopting words from one language into another language to enrich vocabulary and support communication. According to Allan’s theory, lexical borrowing is classified into three types: loanword, which involves adopting a word from another language; loanblend, which combines borrowed elements with elements from the receiving language; and loanshift, which involves adopting a meaning or concept from another language using existing words in the receiving language.
In social media, especially Instagram captions, lexical borrowing occurs when users or content creators use words from another language to communicate information in a concise, familiar, and engaging way. In Indonesian Instagram captions, English borrowed words may be used to deliver information efficiently and follow common language practices in digital communication. Therefore, analysing lexical borrowing in Instagram captions can help explain how English vocabulary is adopted and used in Indonesian social media, including the possible changes in the forms and meanings of borrowed words.
This study aims to analyse the types of English lexical borrowing and the changes in form and meaning of borrowed words found in Instagram captions uploaded by @detikcom concerning flood disasters in Sumatra. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design with document analysis as the method of data collection and analysis. The data consisted of 112 Instagram captions published between November 26, 2025, and January 20, 2026. The data were analysed based on Allan’s (2020) theory of lexical borrowing, Haspelmath and Tadmor’s (2009) theory of form adaptation, and Traugott’s (2017) theory of semantic change.
The findings identified 71 English lexical borrowing items, consisting of
54 loanblends (76.06%), 15 loanwords (21.13%), and 2 loanshifts (2.82%).Loanblend was the most dominant type of lexical borrowing found in the captions. Regarding changes in form, 47 borrowed words underwent adaptation, consisting of 26 morphological adaptations, 17 spelling adaptations, and 4 phonological adaptations, with morphological adaptation being the most dominant. Furthermore, seven borrowed words experienced changes in meaning. Semantic narrowing was the most dominant type, occurring in five words, while semantic shift occurred in two word. No instances of semantic broadening were identified. The findings indicate that English lexical borrowing in @detikcom’s Instagram captions is adapted to the linguistic system of Indonesian and the communicative demands of digital communication, particularly the need for clarity, precision, and efficiency in delivering information about flood disasters.
