Abstract

Ferin Agista Handayani,2021: The Implementation of Cooperative Script Method to Improve Students’ Speaking Skill at Eight Graders of SMP Al Ibrahimy Silo Jember. Speaking is a process of giving information and ideas orally from one person to another. Speaking is considered as the most important skill that should be mastered by students to interact with other people easily. In the preliminary study, the researcher found that students at eight grade of SMP Al-Ibrahimy had problems in speaking. The students’ problems in speaking were they still lacked of vocabulary, lacked of practice and they were not confident to speak English. Besides, the students lacked of English subject and they also hesitated to express their ideas. Based on the data from English teacher, there were only 20% of students reached the passing grades and 80% of students did not achieve passing grades. It means that the students need something new in teaching and learning process. Cooperative script is the one of cooperative learning methods used to support teaching speaking. Cooperative script guides the students to speak up and make them more active.Therefore, in this research the researcher and English teacher collaboratively used cooperative script method to teach speaking and solved the problems above. The research question in this research was, “How could the implementation of cooperative script method improve students’ speaking skill at eight grade students of SMP Al-Ibrahimy?”, The objective of the research was to describe how cooperative script could improve the students’ speaking skill at eight grade students of SMP Al-Ibrahimy. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The classroom action research design in this research was collaborative classroom action research. The participants of this research were twenty students of eight graders of SMP AlIbrahimy. This research was conducted in one cycle with four meetings. In this cycle, there were four steps namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The data in this research was completed by students’ speaking test, interview, observation and document review. After implementing cooperative script method, the students’ speaking skill was improved. The result of the students’ speaking test score showed that the mean score was 72,5. There were 14 students or 70% of the total students who got score above passing grade meanwhile 6 other students were under that criterion. This research could be said as successful because the criteria of success of this research was 60% of total students which research reached the minimum score (70). The elements of speaking which got improvement since implementing cooperative script method were vocabulary and pronunciation. The researcher gave suggestion for English teacher to implement cooperative script method in teaching speaking to help students improve their speaking skill. The researcher also gave suggestion to other researcher to conduct better research on other skills. Keywords : cooperative script method, speaking skill
