Abstract

Afi Nuris Anggraeni, 2022.An Analysis of students’ difficulties in translating narrative text at Madrasah Aliyah Miftahul Ulum Kalisat.

Translation becomes a primary necessity for students who learn English as a foreign language. Translation should be learned by the students especially in the countries where English is not being the second language. Technique for teaching translation English is the ways of presenting the language to the students, because teaching will be succsefull if the teacher implements the appropriate technique in the class. The same as in other countries, in Indonesia for instance, translation is needed by the teacher and students in teaching and learning process in order to help students in translating the material from English into the Indonesian vice versa. In grade of senior high school, most of students must be mastered how to translate many kind of English text, such as narrative text. Narrative is a type of text that has characteristic features of verb and past events. Therefore, the students are required to master the types of text that is studied through a text system. However, students in translating narrative text have several obstacle that hinder students in translating narrative text. Therefore, the researcher was interested in conducting this study at Madrasah Aliyah Miftahul Ulum Kalisat.
This research focuses on: 1) what are the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of MA Miftahul ulum kalisat in translating narrative text? 2) What are the factor that affaecting students’ difficulties in translating narrative text? 3) What are the strategies to overcome the students’ difficultis in translating narrative text?
This researcher used qualitative descriptive. The researcher used Miles Huberman and Salada theory which consist of three steps, such as: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. While for data collection technique, the researcher used observation, interview, and document review.
The results of the research are: 1) What are the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of MA Miftahul ulum kalisat in translating narrative text? There were divided into five types of difficulties in the field: a) Students’ difficulties in grammatical. b) Students’ difficulties in vocabulary. c) Students’ difficulties to understand the meaning of words that not find in dictionary. d) Students’ difficulties in arrange the sentence into target language. e) Students’ difficulties to translate the long and complex sentence. 2) What are the factor that affaecting students’ difficulties in translating narrative text? There were two categories: a) motivation factor was lazy and bored. b) Teaching technique. 3) What are the strategies to overcome the students’ difficultis in translating narrative text? The strategies that used by students’ to overcome the difficulties divide into two strategies: a) Checking word entry in dictionary. b) Asking teacher and friends.
