Abstract

Key words: small group discussion, writing, analytical exposition text
This research is about testing of applying small group discussion method to write analytical exposition text for eleventh graders in SMAN 1 Srono. Based on interview with the English teacher, the most of students’ writing ability was still low. The most of students often cite from internet when given writing task. Sometimes, the students finished the writing task by collaborative. Whereas, writing is one of English skills that must be mastered by English learner. Writing is one of skills in English that emphasized in the education system. writing used as a tool to communicate or conveying thoughts, ideas, and facts in easy and clearly language. There are many ways for English learner especially students’ eleventh grader in SMAN 1 Srono who want to enhance their writing ability. One of that is using small group discussion in teaching and learning analytical exposition text process.
The research question in this research was “Is there any significant effect of small group discussions to students’ writing analytical exposition text for eleventh graders in SMAN 1 Srono?”. The research objective in this research was to investigate whether or not there is significant effect of small group discussion on students’ writing of analytical exposition text for eleventh graders in SMAN 1 Srono.
The researcher used quantitative research approach and the design was non-equivalent control group. The researcher conducted research in two classes, those were XI IPS 2 as the control class and XI IPA 1 as the experimental class. The researcher applying small group discussion only in XI IPA 1. To collect the data, the researcher used students’ writing test. The test was utilized to investigate the effect of students’ writing achievement after the research had been conducted.
The result of the research showed that mean score of post-test in experimental class was 84,17 and control class was 68,30. It showed that experimental class was got higher score than control class. Then, the result of independent sample T-test using SPSS 28.0 showed that the significance value (<0,001) was lower than significance level 0,05. Thus, it could be concluded that there is an effect of using small group discussion to write analytical exposition text for eleventh graders in SMAN 1 Srono.
