Abstract

Instructional materials are not only used as an introduction to teaching, but also as a key and a strong basis of a learning process because it determines the success of students in learning. And in order to achieve its objectives, teachers should be able to select materials that are appropriate to the student's circumstances, in accordance with the scientific principles, and in accordance with the social background of the students. Therefore, the materials are very important in the learning process to enhance the quality of educational programs. But in fact, the difficulties in learning Arabic materials has not been solved so far that it leads to the low interest in learning Arabic language as students are easily bored because the materials used do not change over time nor comport with the three principles of teaching. The problem found by the researcher in Madrasah Aliyah Darush Sholah was that teaching Arabic less encouraged students’ interest to enjoy learning Arabic. Therefore, the researcher tried to develop instructional materials to give innovation to the learning of Arabic to encourage students’ interest in learning Arabic, also to cultivate teachers’ creativity in designing and developing instructional materials for Arabic language. This study aimed to develop instructional books for second graders majoring in social studies in Madrasah Aliyah Darush Sholah Jember in order to improve their reading skills by considering the required aspects and student’s ability. The research procedure used in this research was experiment using Pre-test and Post-test research design. This type of research is included in “Research & Development” research. Whereas, the approach used was qualitative-quantitative approach with the aim to determine the effects of teaching effectiveness for reading skills by using the instructional materials that have been developed. The steps in developing these instructional materials were 1. preliminary study 2. planning and developing 3. instructional materials compilation 4. expertise of field assessment 5. revision 6. practice 7. post revision. While the data-collection instruments were observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. The results of this study indicated that the instructional materials which had been developed could help students’ skills in reading and understanding Arabic texts. They were effective materials which provided positive influence for students’ reading skills, and also helped teachers in teaching and learning process.
