Abstract
Speaking ability is one of the most essential skills in English language learning, yet it remains one of the most challenging skill for many students. In the context of English language learning, the development of speaking skills is closely related to various factors, one of which is students’ behavior in learning is believed to play a significant role in shaping students’ speaking performance. Students’ behavior includes the habit of using the target language, the level of active participation, self-confidence, and discipline.
This study aimed to investigate whether there was a significant correlation between students’ behavior and speaking ability of ninth grade students at MTs Unggulan Al-Qodiri 1 Jember. The research question addressed in this study was: “Is there any significant correlation between students’ behavior and the speaking ability of ninth grade students at MTs Unggulan Al-Qodiri 1 Jember?”
This study employed a quantitative correlational research design. Data were collected through a questionnaire to measure students’ behavior and an oral speaking test to assess students’ speaking ability. The speaking test evaluated five aspects: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Statistical analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS to determine the correlation between the two variables.
The findings of this study revealed the degree and significance of the relationship between students’ behavioral patterns and their oral English performance in the unique bilingual environment of MTs Unggulan Al-Qodiri 1 Jember, where students were required to alternate between Arabic and English on a weekly basis. The results were expected to provide valuable empirical insights for English teachers and educators in developing more effective, behavior-based speaking strategies in Islamic junior high school settings.
