Tamziyatul Ismul Maula. 2023. The Effect of Save the Last Word for Me
Strategy on Students’ Reading Comprehension of the Second Grade Students at
Madrasah Tsanawiyah Unggulan Al-Qodiri I Jember In Academic Year Of
2022/2023.
Keywords: Save the last word for me, Reading Comprehension
Save the Last Word for Me is able to create communicative classes that
can help students improve their concentration in reading text and help students
learn to choose main ideas and supporting ideas in text. This strategy includes
good activities for classes of varying abilities and provides a framework for text
discussion. This research investigated the effect of save the last word for me on
students‟ reading comprehension since it was found that there was a problem in
reading faced by the students of the second grade of Madrasah Tsanawiyah
Unggulan Al-Qodiri I Jember.
The problem of this research was formulated “Is there any significant
effect of Save the Last Word for Me strategy on students‟ reading comprehension
of the second grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Unggulan Al-Qodiri I
Jember?”. The objective of this research was to obtain the significant effect of that
strategies on students‟ reading comprehension.
The research used quasi experimental design. The sample of this research
were two classes consisting of 22 students for experimental class and 22 students
for control class. In experimental class, the researcher used “save the last word for
me” strategy and in control class used reading aloud to teach students. In
collecting data the researcher conducted pre-test and post-test by serving a
multiple choice test which consists of 20 items. After giving pre-test and post-test,
SPSS Statistic 22 version was used to analyze the data.
The result of analysis of the data by SPSS Statistic 22 version showed that
the mean of pre-test in experimental class was 49.09 while the mean post-test was
82.73 so from that scores there were improvement. The result from Sig. (2-tailed)
obtained from post-test result between experimental class and control class was
0.002, it revealed that the result of Sig. (2-tailed) was < 0.05. From the data
presented it can be concluded that alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and
null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected.
Those results showed there was an effect of Save the Last Word for Me
strategy on students‟ reading comprehension of the second grade students at
Madrasah Tsanawiyah Unggulan Al-Qodiri I Jember in academic year of
2022/2023.
