Abstract

Role-play is an effective method for improving students' speaking skills, especially in English. One of the schools that applied the role-play method is MA Plus Al-Mashduqiah Kraksaan Probolinggo. This program is implemented in class 11 every semester before the exam. The teacher gives students one month to prepare for the implementation. This program is certainly different from programs in other schools, especially in learning English. Because this program is the hallmark of teachers at MA Plus Al-Mashduqiah as a method of learning English, students can improve their speaking skills.
This study has research focus namely: 1. How are the procedures of role play in implementation in speaking class? 2. How are the advantages and disadvantages of role play toward students’ speaking skill in speaking class? 3 How are students’ problems in implementing role play in speaking class? 4 What are the teachers’ strategies in solving the problem in speaking class?
This research used a qualitative research with case study as research design, it was conducted in the eleventh grade of MA Plus Al-Mashduqiah. The data were gathered by observation, interview, and document review, while, to validity the data, researcher used source triangulation, technic triangulation, and time triangulation. To analyze the data, researchers used data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions as data analysis.
The research results are: 1) the procedures in implementing of role play in speaking class were; Planning, Implementing and scoring or evaluating. 2) The advantages role play in speaking class were fun, Being able to speak fluently, being able to train mentally to speak in front of people, it's faster to understand the material, it's more exciting, and it's not easy to get bored, while the disadvantages are the place; it needs a wide place; it disturbs other students, not serious about discussing, joked, the lesson was not conducive because some one of them walked alone. 3) Students’ problems in implementing role play is speaking class are, needs a large space, disturbs other classes, has lots of activities, so they are not focused, not serious, feel shy, lack self-awareness for effort, and look up to the smart ones, students felt confused to understand the material.4) The teachers’ strategies in solving problem in implementing role play in speaking class are: the teacher divided into groups, they must have group discussions outside class, students must bring two dictionaries, and they have to consult the teacher if there is anything they did not know or felt confused about, he controlled students’ discussion.
