Zaenatul Firdaus, 2023: The use of REAP (Read, Encode, Annotate and Ponder)
Strategy to Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension at Seventh Grade of MTsN
4 Jember in Academic Year 2022-2023.

Reading is one of the important skills for students to get some information,
thus students need to improve the reading skill. Based on the preliminary study
done by the researcher, it suggested that the majority of students have a problem
as they were struggling in understanding reading text. Some of the factors include
students’ difficulty to find the meaning of the words and the main idea of the
paragraph. Accordingly, the researcher proposed the REAP (Read, Encode,
Annotate and Ponder) strategy to overcome students’ reading comprehension.
The research question of this research is “How does REAP strategy improve
students’ reading comprehension in MTsN 4 Jember?” The objective of this
research is to know how REAP strategy improve students’ reading comprehension
in MTsN 4 Jember.
This research used Classroom Action Research adopted by Kemmis and Mc.
Taggart. The classroom action research design in this research was collaborative
classroom action research. There were several steps done in this research
including: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The participants of this
research were the students of seventh grade E of MTsN 4 Jember in 2022/2023
academic year. To collect the data the researcher used a reading comprehension
test (multiple choice), teachers’ observation sheet, interview, document review.
This research was conducted in 2 cycles. The first cycle consisted of 3 meetings
and the second cycle consisted of 2 meeting. The criteria of success used in this
research was when the students, at least 75% of the total number of the students,
got the minimum score or were equal to or higher than 70.
The result of the research suggested that the reading comprehension of the
seventh grade E students in MTsN 4 Jember improved through REAP strategy.
The result showed in first cycle there were only 18 students or 69% could pass the
KKM. It could be stated that the first cycle did not reached the criteria of success
and the researcher continued the research in to the second cycle. Some of the
reasons were related to the students’ difficulty to understand what the text was
about and to implement the REAP strategy appropriately in remembering some
new vocabularies. In the second cycle there were 24 students or 92% could pass
the KKM and for students did not pass the KKM score were only 2 students. It
could be stated that this research was reached the criteria of success. Based on the
data analysis the researcher concluded that the use of REAP strategy could
improve students’ reading comprehension.
