Abstract
Reading is a process that is largely determined by what reader’s brain, emotions and beliefs bring to the reading, i.e. knowledge of information strategies to process the text, mood, fear and excitement. the improvement of students in reading comprehension can be teachers' parameter to see the success of teaching reading. As happened in Asy-Syarifiy Junior High School especially for the 8th graders, the students still felt difficult to improve their reading comprehension, especially in recount text. With the characteristic of retelling a story or event, recount text is a way of summarizing or retelling a story in the readers' own words. Hence, the strategy is needed in teaching learning with the aim of solving students’ problems in improving reading comprehension. One of the strategies that can be used is Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CRIC) strategy that is expectedly able to help students in improving their reading comprehension.
The research question of this research is “How does the implementation of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CRIC) strategy improve the reading comprehension of recount text of the 8th graders of Asy-Syarifiy Junior High School?” this research aimed to describe whether using of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CRIC) Strategy can improve students’ comprehension.
This research design is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) with one cycle conducted in four meetings. This research was conducted at Asy-Syarifiy Junior High School, Tempeh-Lumajang. The participants of this research were 25 students of class VIII D. This research used the procedure of Kemmis and McTaggart which are planning, action, observation and reflection. This study used two tests to measure the improvement of students' reading comprehension in recount text, namely pre-test and post-test. The data collection techniques used in this study were observation, document review, test, and reflection.
The results of students' reading test scores in cycle 1 showed that 23 students or 92% of students passed with scores above the KKM and for students who did not pass (below the KKM score) were 8% or 2 students. It can be concluded that this research was successful. This research only uses one cycle because, with one cycle, students have already shown significant results and provided sufficient information to make the necessary adjustments without requiring additional cycles. the existence of reflection (reflection on, in, and for action) which conducted at each meeting, the students' enthusiasm and the active role of the teacher in guiding students in the classroom also become important points that support the success of this research.
