Abstract

Jember, is a city that participates in feeling the pulse of change. As a student city, Jember shows a change that is almost the same as other metropolis in Indonesia. Meanwhile, as a city of students, religious nuances of Jember are also more pronounced. How do the students, kiai and their mothers as important elements in pesantren deal with these things. That is also what appears in the lives of the mothers of Jember in dealing with changes and shifts in the orientation of people's lives. There is doubt in the mind of her mother on the one hand to hold fast to the religion of Islam, but on the other hand they must follow the inevitable developments in life. These mothers are ambiguous: is it the religion that has to be won or the changing times that are followed. Starting from that, this research focuses on the following three questions: (1) What is Ibu Nyai's view of career women in Jember Regency in 2019? (2) How is the typology of Ibu Nyai in terms of thoughts about career women in Jember Regency in 2019 ?; (3) What are the factors that influence the thinking of Ibu Nyai in Jember Regency in 2019? And (4). What is the link between the thoughts of Ibu Nyai's Career Woman and the model of the movement to fight for gender equality in Jember Regency in 2019?The method used in this thesis research is qualitative research using a gender perspective and also the sociology of Islamic law. The conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) some of Nyai's mothers in Jember Regency have a conservative view of career women. Regarding gender equality, they disagree with this. They also disagree with career women because for them madlaratnya more than the problem. Meanwhile, other parts of Ibu Nyai in Jember Regency have very advanced views. They agree with gender equality and the role of women in the public sphere, including to become a career woman. (2) that internal to Nyai, they are divided into three groups. There are traditionalist, fundamentalist, and modernist Nyai mothers. (3) Nyai's thoughts in Jember Regency are strongly influenced by the level of formal and non-formal education as in pesantren. Likewise, they are influenced by their involvement in the fiqh nisa activities' or gender activities developed by various NGOs (NGOs) which are very large in forming their thought groups. (4) Ibu Nyai in Jember District chose a softer movement to fight for gender equality. Nyai mothers in Jember Regency also do not dare to go further as promoted by liberal gender activists in big cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar and so on. keywords; Career Woman, Mother Nyai, Jember
